Monash Divisional Swimming Carnival

Monash Divisional Swimming Carnival

John Monash students were excited to get into the pool and race at the recent Monash Divisional swimming carnival held at the Oakleigh Outdoor Pool.

Amongst some tough competition, the students all tried their best and obtained some fantastic results. Several divisional records were also broken.

In the 52 events that JMSS entered, we placed in every event! This included:

  • 30 first placings
  • 16 second placings
  • 6 third placings

We also had three age group champions

  • 15 Y Male champion – Nicolas Abels
  • 16 Y Male champion – Tom Blight
  • 17 Y Male champion – Kesara Kapugeekiyana

Overall, JMSS placed third with 546 points. We came second in the Intermediate Shield with 242 points and third in the Senior Shield with 304 points (only 13 more points and we would have won the senior shield!). Congratulations to the following students who won their race and will be moving onto the zone finals: Nicolas Abels, Shehara Aponso, Olivia Armstrong, Tom Blight, Amanda Duong, Ben Fung, Steph Garra, Daniel Glenister, Kesara Kapugeekiyana, Christie Leong, Crystal Li, Oliver Mulherin, Holly-Jo Nelson, Maivi Nguyen, Arnold Ong, Andrey Pakhomov,  Anita Schnell, Judy Si Tu, Amy Sun, Max Stewart and Henry Trang.

Thank you to the students who stepped into races at the very last minute – Arnold, Holly-Jo, Kesara, Max, Olivia and Tom – the positive attitudes demonstrated by these students became infectious. A huge thank you to Miss Chaplin for her superb management of the team, to Miss Milton for her impeccable work as a timing official and a special thanks to parent Mrs Kim Wong who gave up her time to come along and volunteer as a judge on the day.

All smiles at the camp.

Year 12 Camp

"Success doesn't come to you. You go to it", is what sums up the year 12 camp and what all of us learnt.

It was a sunny day on the 22nd of February, when the year 12 cohort of students embarked on their journey to Lord Somers camp, a camp bordered by beach and beautiful views on the outside and inside of it.

The year 12's were able to learn about good nutrition, success in the VCE, job interview skills, astronomy and so much more. It benefited us by not only allowing us to have fun, but also giving us a great start to this challenging yet eventful year.

One of the favourite experiences in the camp was visiting the beach, where we could all relax and have fun with our friends and enjoy the sunshine.

Rogaining was also a feature of the camp. Getting lost along the way, starting off dry, returning soaking wet, and turning up at the camp hours later, were just a few of the things the year 12's got up to.

Trivia was exciting and even stressful at times, as we all wanted to be the winning mentor group and even more, beat the teachers and prove that we were smarter! It was an activity which brought out the competitive spirit in both the teachers and the year 12 students!

Our last camp ever for high school, reminiscing about being the founders of John Monash and sharing moments that we will remember forever.

- Natasha Madan (Year 12 Student)

Year 10 Marine Biology

On February 28th an excited class of Marine Biology students and their devoted teachers Mr Webster and Mr Webber jumped on the buses driven by Mr G and Ms Grainger to head down to Phillip Island for Marine Biology Camp. First activity for the day was down at Smith’s Beach where we split into separate groups to learn about intertidal zones and what lives in each zone, as well as learning about creatures and their traits and adaptations. We then went to have lunch before coming back to the beach to try and complete an assessment task. This didn’t work out as planned as the tide had come in and completely covered the rock platforms so we decided that the following morning would be a better time to complete it.

From the beach we headed to Phillip Island Nature Park where we were met by Park Rangers to learn about penguins. The information we learnt during this talk was incredibly interesting and informative. We learnt all about the little penguins and their location around Victoria, their feeding habits, their malting and their breeding. We also went and saw penguins in their burrows, learnt about their predators and some of the tasks a ranger may partake in. We then headed back to the resort to eat dinner and rug up for the penguin parade that night where we saw the penguins come in from the water to the burrows on land.

The next day we woke up and headed back down to Smith’s beach where we completed our assessment task. In groups, we were given a question to answer by designing a method and completing this task. Although some found this a challenge, it was an exciting and interesting task to complete.

We then walked up to the surf shop and got into our wetsuits for our surfing lesson! We walked down to the water and learnt about the ocean and currents. Everyone seemed to have an awesome time in the water, with many of us capable of standing up and surfing the waves. We all then boarded the buses and headed to Cowes to buy our lunches before heading back to school. All in all the camp wasa fun and exciting trip which everyone thoroughly enjoyed!

The next week our class took part in a squid dissection outside on the deck. In pairs, we followed a booklet to dissect the squid and find out interesting features of its physical make-up. Everyone got involved and took part making the prac very worthwhile.

A fantastic start

Our new student body welcomes some 30 Year 11s and 200 Year 10s to its ranks. The buzz on the first day was palpable, and as each day passes our new students are settling further into their routines here. I would like to sincerely congratulate all of our students on the outstanding start they have made to their studies so far, and the way our new students have embraced the expectations placed upon them by their new school and new surrounds. - Peter Corkill (Principal)

VCE Results in 2011

Congratulations to our students on their outstanding VCE results last year, amazing considering that none of them were in Year 12! Our mean study score was 38, and we had 33% of our study scores over 40. This is an incredible effort which was just reward for all of the hard work of students and staff so characteristic of the past two years. It gives us all great confidence as the Year 12 cohort moves through this exciting and important year of study. Now is the time for all students to begin as they intend to continue, and get good study habits and routines in place.
